EXHIBITION ARCHIVE

Oc-Eo Art
Through Eastern Eyes
March 17 - 22 , 2008
12 - 8pm daily; closing at 4pm on the last day

Through Eastern Eyes presents an eclectic collection of modern and contemporary painting from Asia, on show at the Arndean Gallery for ONE week only.

The exhibition features four Vietnamese artists painting in lacquer on wood. Painting with lacquer has long been a traditional craft in Vietnam, but over the last 50 years it has been elevated to the status of 'fine art'. Dinh Quan has been at the forefront of innovation in the medium, as has Dao Minh Tri. Thanh Mai is a young artist working in Ho Chi Minh City, and Chuongs 'Buffalo Kids' are recognised and sought after across Asia and the USA.

In addition, we will be showing a collection of Chinese ink and watercolours from X'ian, as well as oil paintings from a leading Singaporean, Ang Ah Tee; He Hongwei, an exciting new Chinese artist already starting to create a stir in Beijing; and several young Vietnamese artists.

Jamie Primrose
From Dawn to Dusk: Atmospheric oils and Indian inks
November 26 - December 1, 2007
10am - 6pm Monday to Saturday

Contemporary Scottish artist Jamie Primrose is one of Scotland's most talented landscape, seascape and cityscapes artists. Following 11 successful exhibitions in Edinburgh and one in London since 2003, he presents a stunning showcase exhibition of original oils and Indian inks at The Arndean Gallery in Cork Street. This collection leads us on an atmospheric journey to some of Europe's most captivating cities, including London, Edinburgh and Venice and also includes some of the artist's finest Scottish landscapes and seascapes.

In his European cityscapes, Jamie Primrose captures the unique light, colour and atmosphere, depicting the diverse architecture and landscapes of each beautiful city: From spectacular sunsets over the Scottish capital to the early morning ripples and the gleaming twilight reflections shimmering on The Thames and his romantic Venetian waterways. Jamie Primrose's Scottish landscapes and seascapes also exude an atmospheric and ethereal quality: from vivid colourful seascapes and iridescent beaches to darker lochs and landscapes at dawn and dusk from the East and West coasts of Scotland.

Limited Editions - perfect Christmas gifts To celebrate his 10th solo art exhibition in Edinburgh since 2003, the successful contemporary Scottish artist recently launched his debut collection of exclusive limited edition prints. These very special prints include a selection of the artist's stunning highland lochs and seascapes, and highly collectable London and Edinburgh cityscapes. These are ideal for Christmas gifts and will be on display at the gallery during From Dawn to Dusk.

Artist Background: Born and brought up in Edinburgh, Jamie Primrose graduated with a BA Hons in Fine Art from Newcastle University in 1994. In just four years since returning to the Scottish capital to become a professional artist in 2003, he has already hosted many sell-out exhibitions in the UK, establishing himself as a prominent contemporary Scottish artist. His artworks can also be seen in many exclusive private and corporate collections across Europe, the USA and Hong Kong and he exhibits with a selection of galleries throughout the UK. The artist is also in demand, although fully booked for private and corporate commissions for 2008, he is now taking bookings for spring 2009. Jamie Primrose was also a recent finalist for the prestigious Jolomo Lloyds TSB Scotland Awards 2007 for his outstanding artworks of the Scottish landscape.

Lynn Poland
October 15 - 20, 2007

Lynn Poland works from the landscape to produce paintings that are vibrant and highly textured. During the past six months, with the support of Moyle's Hotel, she has gathered the majority of her inspiration from the countryside surrounding Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire.

"I am inspired by wide open landscapes; the vastness of moorland, the texture of grasses against the smoothness of sky."

The Balance between land and sky is a constant preoccupation. In some paintings the land dominates and the sky is a narrow ribbon across the top of the image. In others the land has become secondary to a dramatic sky.

"I am inspired by the colour and form of landscape. The effects of weather and light provide a constantly changing theatre. Scenes fluctuate subtly or dramatically according to time and season. Bands of earth and sky can be clearly defined or merge and diffuse."

Lynn uses an extensive range of materials and techniques to produce the highly textured surfaces of her paintings. An array of distressed, natural fabrics is stitched on to the canvas before it is stretched. Oil paint is applied in layers to build a rich surface.

Stephen B Whatley
Hollywood Icons to Royal Gems
A Major Exhibition of Paintings and Drawings
September 3 - 8, 2007

Stephen B Whatley's major new London exhibition in the capital's famous Cork Street, heart of the London art scene, brings together a dazzling and eclectic collection of vibrant oil paintings and striking charcoal drawings.

The exhibition includes iconic portraits of classic Hollywood stars and players, including British actresses such as Frances Barber and Sian Phillips, who are lending their previously unexhibited portraits. Alongside these are vivid studies of flowers, birds, still-lifes, landscapes and architectural subjects, including two Royal Exclusives.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is lending Stephen B Whatley's 1999 painting of Buckingham Palace, not seen in public since it was commissioned to advertise the Summer Opening of Buckingham Palace, in both 1999 and 2000. The large square painting - made on location from the corner of Green Park, London - normally hangs in Buckingham Palace. The Royal gems are also on loan ... one of the artist's two paintings of the Crown Jewels - from his series of 30 commissioned paintings for HM The Tower of London - receives exclusive exposure with the loan of this original painting. Millions view the huge reproductions of this series of paintings, throughout the Tower Hill Underpass in London, every year; but the originals remain within the walls of The Tower; and not on public display ... until now. The artist has received countless enquiries about viewing the original Tower series - and now, during this show, is the opportunity to view one of his most sparkling and evocative paintings, alongside the opportunity of owning an original work by Stephen B Whatley.

Elena Carr Sculptures and Drawings
Serena Banham Photography

Serena Banham's inspiration comes from the ever changing Cornish light. She says "The same view changes in an instant, I try to capture the moment before its gone". Pierre Farel
Jazz & Rock and Roll

Dynamic and distinctive, Pierre Farel creates a world of decadent sensuality and contemporary elegance. Set against the stunning backdrop of New York, or the intimate atmosphere of Jazz clubs, the figures in his oil paintings communicate through their intense physicality. In the turn of a head or the tilt of the hips we read the expressions that Farel conceals from their faces.

His new paintings centre on the celebratory abandonment and forceful creativity of Jazz and 1970s Rock. Featuring some of Rock and Roll's most iconic artists, this new element of Farel's œuvre celebrates these vibrant and innovative eras of modern music.

Born in the South of France, Farel studied at the Avignon school of Beaux Arts. Winning the 1998 Lila Acheson Wallace Grand Prix at the Chaillot Palace, Paris, was the moment, he says, ‘that I decided I was going to devote my life to painting.'

In subsequent years the cosmopolitan flavour of his work has met with international critical acclaim. Having exhibited in Paris, Marseilles, Bordeaux, Lyon and on the French Riviera, his work has also been shown in Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Hamburg, Lausanne, Beijing, New York, Hong-Kong, Shanghai and Miami.
